The Queen of Pop title has been debated for decades. Madonna was always declared the Queen of Pop by mainstream, while Janet Jackson was largely given the title by her loyal fanbase. Lizzo is weighing in again, and during her recent visit to the ‘Sibling Rivalry‘ podcast, she doubles down on Janet being the true Queen of Pop.
Such a statement has caused her to get dragged by a legion of Madonna fans, and it seems, she is ready to get dragged even further. In the podcast, Lizzo states that Janet "was famous when Madonna was a kid watching her on TV."
This debate has caused many a fan war between the two bases, but is there really a wrong answer? They have similar career trajectories and have both left their mark on every facet of pop culture. They are both legends. I do prefer Janet over Madonna and it would be vice versa for many others. The belief that one artist deserves the title more than the other varies among individuals and which artist impacted that person the most.
Giving Madonna her props, Lizzo adds, “Madonna is the Pop icon, and I love her. And, we can’t refute her influence or what she’s done for all of the divas. She birthed a generation.” Perhaps Lizzo is anticipating the shitstorm ahead. She is clearly hoping such comments will go viral and generate publicity, not only for her latest singles ‘Still Bad’ and ‘Love in Real Life,’ but for her upcoming new album too.
