On April 12th, 2005, Mariah Carey dropped her comeback defining album, ‘The Emancipation of Mimi.’ The music buying public, were preparing to turn their backs, and walk away. But a defiant Mariah wasn't going to go without a fight.
With very little interest in Mariah's music, she decided to step things up a notch. At just 35-years-old, she, was far too young to go out on a sad note. She wasn't going to go quietly, and devised a plan. Wentworth Miller was at the height of his fame in one of TVs biggest drama series (Prison Break). It was at a time when he was pre-closeted, and (at the request of TV execs), masqueraded as a straight man to appease millions of his panty-dropping female admirers.
Mariah thought it would be a good strategy to have him play the love interest, in her lead and follow-up singles. She ended up releasing some of her most iconic music in that period, and it truly was a last hurrah for her, in terms of pop dominance.
Today, she celebrates 20 years of 'The Emancipation of Mimi,’ with the release of ‘The Mimi Sessions’, where she performs hits from the album. Live vocals were delivered in a lower key, and despite the new voice, she continues to blow other singers half her age, completely out the water!
