Back in the 90s, this woman refused to collaborate with female artists outside of her bestie Da Brat, and then, when she was ready, it had to be someone on her level vocally, like Whitney Houston. Perhaps she felt female collabs were beneath her, when the truth was that, she simply didn't need them.
As an artist pushing 60, Mariah is fully aware that ageism is why her records won't get played much on the radio. She is not from the streaming era, and has had to transition herself to the ever changing music landscape.
"Sugar Sweet" is catchier and more sing-along-able than “Type Dangerous.” Her restraint vocal delivery shows great determination in tailoring her new material to fit streaming.
She's not wanting to outsing Kehlani on a bouncy summer bop that is meant to be playful. While it wasn't necessary to feature two guest artists for this song, Shenseea adds copious amounts of Caribbean flare, adding to the song's infectiousness.
We still await that uptempo club banger, as we all know Mariah is good at hitting the spot with those!
