In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Wicked" star Cynthia Erivo says that Beyonce “is one of the most skilled vocalists of our time.”
Making reference to Beyoncé's performance of "Resentment" at the 2014 ‘On the Run’ tour with Jay-Z, Erivo says, “It’s so emotive; it’s full of emotion. It’s an innate quality of storytelling what she’s doing. I’m a purist for melody; if the melody is good, just sing the melody. And, she’s just, singing the melody.”
She further elaborates, “I think she’s one of the most skilled vocalists of our time, and it’s just lovely to hear when it’s just her!”
Erivo's analysis of Beyoncé's vocal skills is very much validated. A lot of powerhouse vocalists have always acknowledged Beyoncé, as not just your typical singer. She is objectively one of the greatest singers of all time, and most people cannot outsing her.
This woman has a 4 octave vocal range, and that in itself is outstanding and extremely uncommon. She is also classically trained, and has clearly taken time to develop her upper register (and all other aspects of her voice).
It goes without notice that Beyoncé's voice was a lot lighter in her earlier years. This was most likely intentional, because she wanted her vocals to align with that very “pop” sound. Typically, when singers want to make radio friendly hits, they tend to take that approach to singing.
If anything, she was vocally holding back. Once she started to break free of pop music norms, we then got to see what Beyoncé could do as a powerful mezzo-soprano.
Of course her voice has changed over the years, becoming deeper and harnessing a much warmer tone now. This, being the result of aging and having multiple children, hence why she chooses to sing some of her songs in a lower key, particularly songs like "Love on Top," during live performances.
Listen, you may not like the girl, you may not like the fact that she released a country album, you may not appreciate her hustle and hard work. You may not even like the way she sings or her vocal tone. And that's okay. Not everyone is going to like Beyoncé or her music. However, one thing no one can say is that this woman, who has dominated the music industry for 30 years, cannot sing. Saying so, would be blasphemous, and ultimately, make YOU a serious hater!
